Twisters: Nature’s Darkest Side – A review by teenage reporters

On Monday, 15th July 2024, London Mums Magazine invited us, two teenage reporters, to check out the latest Warner Brothers movie, Twisters: Nature’s Darkest Side. Get ready to dive into the wild world of tornadoes, some of the most powerful and unpredictable forces of nature. This film not only shows you how tornadoes form and their impact but also revisits how they’ve been depicted in movies, especially in this new sequel to the 1996 hit, Twister.

Twisters poster

To give you a quick science lesson, tornadoes happen when warm, moist air rises and meets cooler air, creating instability in the atmosphere. If conditions are just right, the storm’s updraft starts rotating, and a funnel cloud can drop down to the ground, becoming a tornado.

Back in 1996, Twister brought the jaw-dropping power of tornadoes to the big screen. Directed by Jan de Bont and starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, Twister followed a team of storm chasers led by Dr. Jo Harding (Hunt) and her estranged husband, Bill (Paxton). They were on a mission to deploy “Dorothy,” a high-tech device designed to release hundreds of sensors into a tornado’s core to gather vital data and improve warning systems.

Twister was groundbreaking for its special effects, which made the tornadoes look super realistic and terrifying. It gave us an intense look at the dedication and bravery of real-life storm chasers and meteorologists.

Now, fast forward to 2024, and the adventure continues with Twisters, an indirect sequel that’s ready to wow a new generation. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, this movie introduces fresh characters and cutting-edge tech as they face even more dangerous tornadoes.

The trailer

Daisy Edgar-Jones: “We’re dealing with something we’ve never seen before. This isn’t just about chasing storms; it’s about surviving them.”

Movies like Twister and Twisters are not just about the thrills. They also educate the public about tornado science and the importance of early warning systems. Plus, they inspire future meteorologists and storm chasers who work hard to understand these natural phenomena.

Whether on the big screen or in real life, tornadoes remind us of nature’s incredible power and the ongoing quest to understand and predict their behaviour.

The rating

We gave Twisters a solid 8/10. It was a really enjoyable movie that kept us on the edge of our seats. Thanks for joining us on this whirlwind journey through the world of tornadoes!
