Film review: Disney’s Moana 2 – An empowering sea-faring adventure worth the wait

Last night, London Mums Magazine’s team of teen and mum reporters were invited by Disney to a special screening of the long-anticipated Moana 2 in London. Eight years after the original film stole our hearts, the legendary heroine returns and Disney’s latest offering proves to be a worthy sequel, brimming with adventure, emotion, and vibrant animation.

The 2016 release of Moana introduced audiences to the fearless Polynesian heroine, Moana, whose daring quest to save her island and discover her true destiny resonated across all ages and genders. The original film became an instant classic, celebrated for its inspiring narrative, heartfelt music, and stunning visuals. Fast forward to 2024, and Moana 2 not only lives up to its predecessor but also expands the story in bold and exciting ways.

The story

In this new chapter, Moana, now a confident leader of her people, receives a mysterious call from her way-finding ancestors. Tasked with journeying into the perilous and uncharted waters of Oceania, she sets sail with a colourful crew to uncover long-lost secrets and confront powerful adversaries.

Moana’s companions on this epic voyage include Loto, a quirky engineer who keeps the canoe afloat; Kele, a grumpy farmer-turned-chef; and Moni, an eccentric superfan of Maui. Together, they bring chaos, humour, and unexpected camaraderie to the journey. Moana’s loyal animal sidekicks, Pua the playful pig and Heihei the hilariously clueless chicken, are back to add their unique charm.

The verdict

Moana’s transformation from a spirited adventurer to a formidable leader is at the heart of the story. She not only leads her crew but also rises to confront ancient gods intent on destroying her people. Her journey highlights themes of courage, resilience, and unity as she strives to bring isolated tribes together.

A pivotal moment sees Moana struck by lightning during a climactic battle, leaving her unconscious. Her ancestors appear in a stunning sequence to revive her, bestowing her with tattoos akin to Maui’s and unlocking newfound strength. This powerful scene solidifies her role as a protector and unifier, embodying the essence of leadership and self-discovery.

Maui, voiced again by Dwayne Johnson, also undergoes notable development. Initially trapped in a giant clam, his arc follows a journey from reluctant hero to loyal ally. His arrogance and showmanship remain intact, but his bond with Moana reveals his softer, more vulnerable side. Their chemistry continues to drive the film’s emotional core, with their partnership showcasing mutual respect and growth.

The visuals in Moana 2 are nothing short of breathtaking, with the vast ocean and its mythical elements rendered in exquisite detail. The integration of Polynesian culture, mythology, and traditions continues to shine, immersing viewers in the enchanting world of Oceania.

The soundtrack, featuring Grammy-winning talent Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa‘i, and Mark Mancina, is another highlight. From soul-stirring ballads to lively ensemble numbers, the music enriches the narrative and provides plenty of sing-along moments for audiences of all ages.

Moana 2 is an exhilarating blend of humour, heart, and adventure, reminding us why live-action adaptations can never quite replicate the magic of Disney animation. It’s a family-friendly tale that empowers and entertains, offering lessons on leadership, friendship, and perseverance.

With its stunning animation, engaging characters, and emotional depth, Moana 2 is a triumphant sequel that will captivate fans old and new. London Mums Magazine collectively rated it 8/10, and we encourage families to experience this uplifting adventure together when it releases in cinemas on 29th November 2024.
