A successful international online school has launched in the UK on 28 November (2024) with plans to disrupt the traditional boundaries of education across the country. Unlike any other virtual school, School Beyond Limitations (SBL) teaches children in small, mixed-age groups of eight, via collaborative project-based learning, which focuses specifically on their own personal interests. On a mission to deliver a more meaningful and personalised education where every child can flourish outside of the rigidity of an outdated curriculum, its pupils are also involved in the design of their own learning from primary school and can choose their preferred educational pathway in secondary school and beyond.
Headquarterd in London, SBL believes it is the only school to embrace every aspect of learning from academic and creative to emotional, social and spiritual, to leadership coaching, entrepreneurial and financial education as part of its daily teaching. The school also runs three in-person school residentials every year for experiential learning, and delivers personalised one-to-one mentoring for its students, as well as a bridging year for post-sixth form students needing support with their future.
SBL sees entrepreneurial and leadership skills, is being essential in today’s curriculum. Dr Martina Geromin, Academic and Co-Founder of School Beyond Limitations explained, “We’ve reached a point now where young people are questioning the value of school and education, and its relevance to their future lives. You only need to look at attendance figures and the rise in homeschooling in the UK to see that when it comes to learning, one size doesn’t fit all. As a school, we avoid uninspiring tests and fact-bashing approaches. Through their insightful projects, our students have much greater freedom and space to learn by applying their learning to real life scenarios. This helps to give their learning context and relevance to everyday life, empowering them to reach their full potential and bringing their own unique essence to life.”
Rather than being taught traditional subjects like maths and science, children at SBL learn cross-subject while working on special projects, “Our students understand that maths is not a standalone subject, but a language embedded within the many different projects they are working on. Understanding how one subject translates to another, enhances their academic ability,” added Dr Geromin.
By leaning into their growing curiosity and natural thirst for knowledge, SBL encourages its students to appreciate and question the world around them while developing an entrepreneurial growth mindset around finding solutions to new challenges. By understanding the purpose of their learning, the school believes students feel valued for their individuality.
Accredited by Pearson and in partnership with Mind Valley, SBL has been operating internationally as a leading online school since 2019. School Beyond Limitations (SBL) is an international online school head-quartered in the UK (London) providing primary, secondary and sixth form education for students aged 4 to 19 years.
