ALERT! Important info on Vitamin D deficiency

Recently my doctor found out that I kept having recurring colds and inflamed sinuses due to lack of Vitamin D. Apparently I am not alone as 85% of British adults suffer under Vitamin D3 deficiency due to the lack of sunshine.

So apart from starting to take a high dose of Vitamin D3 supplements I also did some research and this is what I found out.

According to Dr Weil, ‘Vitamin D deficiency is common in the developed world, and according to at least one study, people with very pale skin are most likely to be seriously deficient.’

Researchers at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom took the vitamin D levels of about 1,200 people.

Dr Weil explains that the Leeds study found that ‘730 had lower than optimal levels, and those with fair skin had significantly lower levels. The possible reason? People with very fair skin tend to avoid the sun because they burn easily, making it difficult for their bodies to make sufficient “D” from sun exposure. This suggests that if you have fair skin and tend to avoid direct sunlight, supplementing may be especially important for you. Dr. Weil recommends 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily in the form of D3 (cholecalciferol) rather than D2 (ergocalciferol).

We asked nutritionist Lisa Mody (at VitalLife) about the importance of Vitamin D and this is what she told us:

‘Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin normally produced within the skin after exposure to sunlight.
It is not only essential as a vitamin but also to assist calcium absorption.

Vitamin D has infinite health benefits including strengthening bones and teeth, supporting a healthy immune system and maintaining healthy muscles and nerves.

Food sources can include oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, anchovies, herring, and salmon as well as animal livers and egg yolks.

Research shows the value of taking Vitamin D for building strong muscles as well and healthy joints.

A lack of vitamin D in children can be risky, sometimes leading to rickets. Many companies now sell Vitamin D in pipette form which can be dropped on the tongue.

A deficiency for adults can be equally dangerous and may lead to osteomalacia.

The elderly are also at risk of vitamin D deficiency as our body’s ability to produce this decreases with age.

Summer is on its way and the desire to get that perfect tan is at the front of every woman’s mind! Sunshine is undoubtedly a rare occurrence in the UK and causes a mad rush to the beach at its first appearance. However, when the sun isn’t shining, a worryingly vast number of Britain’s population are making their way to the tanning salon to use notoriously dangerous sunbeds.

Now there’s a safer way to get your daily dose of the ‘sunshine vitamin’ without the fear of burning your skin.
