Bonya, from the UK’s only family-owned, independent formula manufacturer Kendamil, has found that nine in ten (90 per cent) parents are concerned about being able to afford the formula they need for their baby.1 The new study also found that more than eight in ten (88 per cent) of parents agree that there should be a lower-cost formula available to parents in need. Bonya is addressing this by offering UK families a low-cost formula at £8.45 [RRP] that does not compromise on quality; it is palm oil free, made with milk fats for reduced amounts of vegetable oils, is fish oil-free and is formulated to be suitable for halal, kosher and vegetarian diets. This price also means parents who use Healthy Start vouchers will be able to use these to purchase an entire box of Bonya and saves customers a total of £325 over 6 months in comparison to market leaders.2 Most other formulas on the shelf do not come under the £8.50 a week that families can receive to help purchase food for their children, forcing families to top up the extra costs.
‘’We know that parents across the country need a more affordable, nutritionally complete formula, which is why we have launched Bonya; a product that doesn’t compromise quality for affordability. We’re proud that Bonya will be the first formula brand to donate essential baby milk products to charities and food bank partners across the UK to help alleviate some of the strain parents are facing with the cost of living crisis.’’ – Bonya CEO, Ross McMahon.
Some families are spending up to £536 in 6 months3 on the market-leading formula brands. Sadly, those who need more affordable options are forced to settle on formulas that may not meet their preferences, such as using ingredients like maltodextrin, palm oil or fish oil or formulas that are not vegetarian friendly. Bonya offers an affordable alternative without those compromises.
Bonya will not just provide families a more affordable choice on shelf, it will also support those in urgent need of formula across the UK through their first of its kind donation scheme. Bonya has partnered with In Kind Direct, a UK charity that supports charitable organisations in the UK with access to essential products. Bonya will donate 1 box of formula for every 10 sold, to be distributed across the UK through In Kind Direct’s network of food banks and other charitable organisations.
In Kind Direct found that 86 per cent of organisations within their network had an increased need for their services. Alarmingly, 91 per cent of organisations said the people they support will struggle to afford basic essentials this winter.4
“At Sebby’s Corner, we’ve witnessed a staggering 42% increase in demand for baby formula in the past 6 months. Families are struggling to meet their children’s most basic needs, with many parents forced to skip meals or water down formula just to stretch supplies. One mother shared how she rationed formula for days, skipping her own meals to prioritise her baby. These heartbreaking stories are becoming far too common, underscoring the urgent need for support. No parent should ever have to choose between feeding themselves and feeding their child.” – Bianca Sakol MBE, Founder & CEO.
Additionally, seven in ten (73 per cent) parents polled who formula feed said if they were struggling to make ends meet and buy everyday essentials they would be likely to use a charitable foodbank to find baby formula. This partnership will offer a solution for those families, as well as help to reduce the burden on overstretched charities.
‘’We’re thrilled to partner with Kendamil on the launch of their new Bonya baby formula. Through our network of charitable organisations, we see a rising demand for support as more parents and caregivers struggle to access the products they need to live well. For every 10 packs purchased, one will be donated to provide essential nutrition for babies across the UK. This partnership will make a significant impact and will help thousands of UK families – We’re so proud to be involved.’’ – In Kind Direct Acting CEO, Marc Greene.
Bonya will be available nationwide via Tesco and Sainsbury’s stores from the 4th November 2024, at the RRP of £8.45. To find a store near you, visit www.bonya.co.uk.
