Relaxation can be hard to come by in this day and age, what with the hustle and bustle of cities and the intrusiveness of technology. It’s actually no wonder so many of us are living with mental health conditions. The rise of mental health conditions across the county is significant, whether that be anxiety, depression or even addiction, with more people checking into private alcohol and drug rehabilitation centres in Essex than ever before.
Looking after ourselves is key and finding healthy coping mechanisms to deal with stress, trauma, anxiety and depression is a must. A common, and effective, way to do that is through getting out into the fresh air and at one with nature. It’s recommended by many mental health professionals, from therapists to counsellors, GPs to psychologists, and across Essex there are plenty of spots to find that solace and tranquillity.
So, if you’re feeling a little stressed, or wish to get out in nature as part of your mental health routine, here are five spots across the county that can help you unwind and reconnect with nature…
Epping Forest
One of the largest ancient woodlands in England, Epping Forest is the perfect place to get lost in and enjoy some time to yourself. Stretching between East London and Essex, it is the perfect blend of finding nature without having to venture too far out of the city.
The forest itself is full of wildlife to lookout for, while you’ll find tons of trails perfect for everyone. Whether you’re wanting a gentle, short stroll, a long woodland hike, a cycle or even a horse ride there are options for you.
For those seeking a calm atmosphere with great views, head towards High Beach, where you’ll find just that with the perfect spot sitting by one of the areas many tranquil ponds.
Dedham Vale
On the border of Essex and Suffolk, Dedham Vale is a Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so you really are bound to find a spot to sit back, relax and just take in the nature surrounding you.
It’s long been an area of inspiration for the likes of painters and artists, most notably John Constable who has produced many works of the area.
It exudes a real peaceful charm, with its gently flowing rivers, ancient meadows and rolling hills. A leisurely walk along the River Stour is a good place to start, while if you’re looking for some nice cafes along the way, a walk around Dedham or Flatford can be just as peaceful.
Southend-on-Sea’s Beaches
There’s something incredible about the coast isn’t there? The sea air and looking out over miles upon miles of water really does put things into perspective. While Southend may be known for its lively seaside attractions and the jingle jangles of penny arcades, there are places that offer a more peaceful experience too.
Chalkwell and Leigh-on-Sea are two good options, offering a more unhurried atmosphere, ideal for a calming walk or sit down in the sun. They offer gorgeous views across the Thames Estuary, with the gentle breeze and calming sound of the waves ideal for reflecting and relaxing.
Thorndon Country Park
Nestled on the edge of Brentwood, Thorndon Country Park is a haven of peace, providing visitors with an escape into the heart of the Essex countryside. This large park offers a variety of landscapes, from woodlands and meadows to tranquil lakes. The park’s peaceful atmosphere makes it ideal for nature lovers and families alike.
The wide-open spaces provide the perfect setting for a leisurely stroll or picnic, while the woodlands are great for quiet walks amongst tall trees and lush foliage. Visitors can also explore the quieter areas near the historic Thorndon Hall, adding a sense of serenity to this beautiful, nature-filled escape.
The Naze, Walton-on-the-Naze
At the northern tip of the Essex coastline, the Naze offers an unspoiled, peaceful retreat. This nature reserve, which overlooks the North Sea, is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The Naze Tower, which stands proudly above the surrounding landscape, offers spectacular views across the coastline.
The surrounding nature reserve is an ideal place to walk, with clifftop paths and tranquil spots for sitting and enjoying the scenery. Unlike some of the more crowded beaches in Essex, the Naze offers a sense of quietude and isolation, making it a perfect location for those seeking solitude by the sea.
