Lewisham local residents can take sport classes at £1 per session at Downham Health & Leisure Centre

Downham Health & Leisure Centre is helping keep teenagers and young adults active this autumn with three exciting new courses, which are being delivered locally as part of the Sportivate programme. Starting on 11 October and for just £1 per session, local residents can sign up for the new Boxing Fitness, Indoor Cycling and Swim 4 Fitness.

Sportivate is a £32 million Lottery programme that gives 14–25 year olds access to six-week courses in a range of sports including those offered at Downham Health & Leisure Centre:

Boxing Fitness (18–25 years and 14–17 years) £1 a session

This brilliant class is a great combination of fitness and fun, using boxing moves to work all areas of the body. Classes run every Tuesday for 18–25 year olds 8–9:30pm and every Wednesday for 14–17 year olds 4:30–5:45pm, beginning 11 October for six weeks.

Indoor Cycling (14–17 years and 18–25 years) £1 a session

These classes will focus on endurance and strength, through the use of high intensity exercise and intervals. Classes run every Wednesday for 14–17 year olds 6–6:45pm and for 18–25 year olds 7–8pm, beginning 12 October for six weeks.

Swim 4 Fitness (18–25 years) £1 a session

Get fit and have fun with these Swim 4 Fitness classes, which offer a clear structure to swim sessions. Classes run every Friday 12 noon–1pm, beginning 14 October for six weeks.

Danielle De Cruz, Community Liaison Manager at Downham Health & Leisure Centre, said:

“Sportivate is a great initiative to help get young people engage in a range of activities. We’re looking forward to welcoming local youth residents to take part in the new courses!”

The Sportivate programme is part of the Play strand of Sport England’s mass participation legacy programme ‘Places, People Play’, which was launched on 15 November 2010. Sportivate will provide a range of attractive and sustainable sporting activities for 14-25 year olds who are not choosing to participate in sport during their own time, or are doing so for a very limited amount of time.
