Smith & Wollensky, an American steakhouse located in Central London, hosted a 4th of July party that showcased its renowned American cuisine and flair. Known for its high-end steaks and impressive wine list, the restaurant has built a reputation for luxurious dining in its mahogany-decked, white-tablecloth setting.
First Impressions and Setting
Located in the Adelphi Building just off the Strand, Smith & Wollensky has certainly invested in creating an opulent atmosphere. The décor is an elaborate display of leather, wood, brass rails, and tasteful murals, aiming to transport diners to a quintessentially American steakhouse. The venue is spacious, capable of seating 300 guests, and is clearly designed to impress.
The Menu
The menu boasts a range of USDA Prime steaks, imported from Iowa, alongside seafood and classic American sides. The prices are on the higher side, with cocktails at £13 each and starters such as medium-sized seared scallops with bacon shards at £18 and jumbo prawns at £14. However, the quality of the ingredients is evident, particularly in the steak offerings.
The Steak Experience
The main attraction, the steaks, showcased the restaurant’s commitment to high-quality meat. We opted for the 24oz bone-in ribeye. The ribeye had a robust flavour with a satisfying char, tender and juicy. The dry-aging process clearly added depth to the meat, making it a highlight of the meal.
Sides and Sauces
The sides and sauces, while varied, had mixed results. The béarnaise and au poivre sauces could use some refinement, but the American style arancini were crispy and delicious. The chips, served in mini fry baskets, were eventually served hot and crispy after a minor hiccup.
Service and Atmosphere
Service at Smith & Wollensky was attentive and friendly, although a bit uncoordinated at times. Our waitress, an Italian young lady, was efficient and charming, adding a personal touch to the experience. The staff’s dedication to making the party enjoyable was evident.
Smith & Wollensky’s attempt to bring American steakhouse elegance to London has potential, thanks to the high quality of its meat and the luxurious setting. While there are areas for improvement, particularly in the coordination of service and refinement of some side dishes and sauces, the overall dining experience is promising. With a few tweaks, Smith & Wollensky could become a go-to destination for steak lovers in London.
