Colonel Saab x Clueless: An inspired pre-Theatre Indian dining experience

A stone’s throw from the Trafalgar Theatre, Colonel Saab offers one of London’s most captivating pre-theatre Indian dining experiences – a lush and sensory journey through India’s rich culinary landscape, now cleverly intertwined with a touch of 90s Hollywood whimsy. To mark the arrival of Clueless: The Musical in the West End, Colonel Saab has launched a limited-edition five-course menu (£60 per person), blending bold Indian flavours with playful nods to the cult film. This immersive experience is the result of a creative collaboration between the restaurant and the producers of Clueless, and it’s nothing short of a theatrical performance in its own right – on a plate.

Setting the Scene

Located at 40–42 William IV Street, just a five-minute walk from the theatre, Colonel Saab is an opulent yet welcoming venue. Elegant chandeliers, antique Indian artefacts, soft lighting and vintage photographs create a mood of understated luxury. The space feels celebratory yet intimate – the ideal setting whether you’re out for a special occasion or treating yourself before curtain up.

On what was my fourth visit to Colonel Saab – a place I consider the finest Indian restaurant in London (with the most delightful customer service) – I was joined by BFF Laura, who described the experience as “truly original, full of warmth and delight,” adding that the setting alone “puts you in a festive mood before even looking at the menu.”

A Menu That Channels Cher (and Chutney)

The Clueless-inspired menu begins with a cocktail – the “Chercules” – a bright, bold mix of D’yavol vodka, fresh lime and raspberries with a subtle sweet heat. “It’s sharp, confident, and just a little flirty,” said Laura, “exactly how I imagine Cher Horowitz would order her Martinis.”

A tiny amuse-bouche follows – an elegantly plated mouthful that sets the tone for a carefully curated series of courses. The dishes that follow are reimagined Indian classics, each named with a cheeky nod to the film:

  • You’re a Virgin Who Can’t Drive: A Madras-spiced pulled chicken chop, tender and tangy, balanced with cooling yogurt and crispy garnish. A perfect starter.

  • The ‘Paul Rudd Never Ages’ Butter Chicken: This signature dish is rich, creamy and comforting, served with gold and silver leaf for a hint of Bollywood extravagance.

  • Aisha’s Favourite Samosa Chaat: A tribute to the Bollywood remake of Clueless, it’s vibrant, crunchy, and layered with texture and tang.

The five-course meal concludes with a gorgeously plated Indian cheesecake, infused with Bengali lime and Jaggery syrup, which both Lauraand myself described as “divine – delicate, yet full of flavour. And honestly, it looked too good to eat.”

Each dish blends traditional Indian ingredients with contemporary presentation and an unmistakable dose of fun – ideal for fans of both high-end dining and pop culture.

Why It Works

This menu is more than a gimmick. It’s a thoughtful fusion of culinary sophistication and theatre-loving spirit. The attention to detail – both in the food and the service – ensures that it never feels like a novelty. The wait staff are warm and attentive, and the pacing between courses is just right for a pre-show schedule.

“The whole thing was seamless,” said Laura. “I’ve done pre-theatre dinners before where you feel rushed — but here, we were given time to savour everything.”

The Clueless Connection

This culinary tribute coincides with Clueless: The Musical, now playing at the Trafalgar Theatre. Inspired by both Jane Austen’s Emma and the 1995 film starring Alicia Silverstone and Paul Rudd, the stage version features an original score by KT Tunstall and lyrics by GRAMMY-winner Glenn Slater. It’s a vibrant reimagining with nostalgic appeal — much like the dinner that precedes it.
