They say the best views come after a climb – and in London, few climbs are more memorable than Up at The O2. This summer marked my fourth ascent, but it was the first time I did it with my son – making it extra special. Not only did we share the thrill of reaching the summit together, but we also recorded a heartfelt video message for my mum’s 80th birthday from the top. Cue the tears!
Summer is undeniably the perfect time for this rooftop adventure. The city stretches out in all directions – a dynamic patchwork of old landmarks and new towers, with Canary Wharf and South East London’s skyline ever evolving. Each time I’ve climbed (and yes, I keep coming back), there’s something fresh to spot: a new building, a hidden gem, or a quirky rooftop addition. It’s a brilliant reminder of how London never sits still.
What to Expect
The experience is 90 minutes in total – from gearing up with harnesses and safety briefings, to making your way up the iconic roof of the world’s most popular entertainment venue. The incline is steady and accessible to most, making it a fantastic activity for families, groups of friends, or anyone looking to see London from a different angle – literally.
Once you reach the top, you’ll be met with a panoramic viewing platform, offering 360° views of the capital. From the Thames curving like a ribbon to the shimmering towers of Canary Wharf, and even glimpses of historic Greenwich – it’s a view that never gets old.
And yes, the descent is just as fun – with a slight bounce in your step as you reflect on what you’ve just achieved (and maybe a cheeky selfie or two for the family group chat).
Family Bonding on the Roof
What made this particular climb unforgettable was sharing it with my son. Watching him take in the sights with wide-eyed wonder, and teaming up to surprise his grandma with a birthday message from the clouds, was priceless. It turned a simple outing into a memory we’ll both treasure forever.
