What to expect at Handel Hendrix House Christmas 2024

Tucked away on Brook Street in Mayfair, London, lies a unique connection between two musical legends separated by time but united in influence: George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix. These historic residences, now Handel Hendrix House, are hosting a magical Christmas celebration from 21st November to 22nd December 2024, and it’s a festive feast for the senses that no music lover or history enthusiast should miss.

I had the honour of attending the exclusive supporters’ launch party, and let me tell you, it was the first time this year that I felt properly festive. From Handel’s Georgian elegance to Hendrix’s swinging sixties vibe, the house is a treasure trove of Yuletide charm. This is no ordinary museum where you simply wander through rooms observing displays. The unique charm of the Handel Hendrix House lies in its immersive, interactive activities that transport you into two distinct eras, allowing you to experience the spirit and creativity of both legendary musicians.

Here’s what you can look forward to this holiday season.

Handel’s home: A Georgian Christmas spectacle

Walking into Handel’s meticulously restored house is like stepping back in time to an era of powdered wigs, candlelight, and sumptuous feasts. For Christmas 2024, each room is adorned with opulent decorations inspired by Handel’s musical legacy.

  • The kitchen feast: The Georgian kitchen is set as if for a festive banquet, complete with historic recipes and displays evoking the 18th-century culinary traditions. You can almost smell the roasted meats and spiced puddings!
  • Messiah immersion: A special exhibit celebrates Handel’s most famous work, Messiah, composed within these very walls. With performances of this beloved oratorio ringing out at Christmas time worldwide, there’s no better place to delve into its creation.
  • Live music: Every weekend, live performances fill Handel’s home with the enchanting sounds of baroque music. It’s a treat that will make your soul soar.

Jimi Hendrix’s flat: A Swinging Sixties celebration

In stark contrast, Jimi Hendrix’s flat upstairs is decked out for a retro 1960s Christmas. It’s intimate, groovy, and brimming with nostalgia.

Imagine knocking on the door of 23 Brook Street in 1968-69. No gates, no security – just Jimi Hendrix himself answering the door. Most visitors came out of curiosity, drawn by the Handel plaque, not realising Jimi was living upstairs. He welcomed them in, embodying the spirit of an era I would have loved to grow up in – a simpler, friendlier world.

  • Themed decorations: Picture a psychedelic holiday with vibrant colours, tinsel galore, and authentic 60s decor. Hendrix’s bedroom even features vintage Christmas albums spinning on his iconic record player.
  • Meyers Dancers: At the launch party, the addition of go-go dancers in Hendrix’s bedroom was a stroke of genius. It captured the free-spirited essence of Hendrix’s London life, and I couldn’t stop grinning.
  • Craft workshops: Families will love the chance to create their own 1960s-inspired Christmas decorations. Who needs mass-produced baubles when you can make something groovy yourself?

Not-to-miss highlights

  • Christmas Lates: On select Thursdays (28th November, 5th & 19th December), the house opens late for an after-hours experience. Enjoy live music, mulled cider or apple juice, and the electric atmosphere of Hendrix’s era.
  • Musical trees: Every room boasts a music-themed Christmas tree, with decorations ranging from tiny instruments to baroque-inspired baubles. I dare say they’re the most gorgeous decorations I’ve seen this year.
  • Gift Shop wonders: The museum’s shop is a treasure trove of unique gifts, perfect for music lovers or anyone hard to shop for.

A tale of two Legends

The story of these two musicians is compelling in its contrasts and similarities. Handel, who lived here from 1723 until his death in 1759, composed some of the most enduring works in classical music, including Zadok the Priest and Music for the Royal Fireworks. Hendrix, who called the flat his home in 1968-69, was at the forefront of rock innovation, creating timeless hits like Purple Haze and Hey Joe. Both men, in their own way, changed the course of music history.

During my visit, I couldn’t help but imagine what it might have been like to knock on Jimi’s door in 1969. No gates, no security – just the man himself welcoming you in to share stories and songs. It’s this spirit of openness and creativity that the Handel Hendrix House captures so beautifully.

Insider tips

  1. Plan Your Visit: The Handel Hendrix House is just minutes from Oxford Street and Bond Street, making it the perfect festive pit stop after a day of shopping.
  2. Bring the Family: Kids will adore the craft workshops and the chance to explore Hendrix’s quirky flat.
  3. Don’t Miss the Birthday Gig: On 27th November, celebrate Hendrix’s legacy with a special concert at St Pancras Old Church featuring Zurito and Seye Adelekan. It’s guaranteed to be unforgettable.

If you’re searching for a festive experience with a twist, Handel Hendrix House delivers in spades as it invites people to “Baroque and Roll” their way through the holidays, blending Handel’s timeless elegance with Hendrix’s electrifying 1960s charm in a celebration that transcends eras. Whether you’re drawn to the grandeur of Handel’s era or the bohemian charm of Hendrix’s London, this is one holiday outing you’ll treasure.

So grab your mulled cider, tune up your carols, and head to Handel Hendrix House to revel in a Christmas celebration like no other. I promise, you’ll leave with a spring in your step, a song in your heart, and maybe even a little rock ‘n’ roll swagger in your walk!
