What to expect at Handel Hendrix House Christmas 2024

Tucked away on Brook Street in Mayfair, London, lies a unique connection between two musical legends separated by time but united in influence: George Frideric Handel and Jimi Hendrix. These historic residences, now Handel Hendrix House, are hosting a magical Christmas celebration from 21st November to 22nd December 2024, and it’s a festive feast for the senses that no music lover or history enthusiast should miss.

I had the honour of attending the exclusive supporters’ launch party, and let me tell you, it was the first time this year that I felt properly festive. From Handel’s Georgian elegance to Hendrix’s swinging sixties vibe, the house is a treasure trove of Yuletide charm. This is no ordinary museum where you simply wander through rooms observing displays. The unique charm of the Handel Hendrix House lies in its immersive, interactive activities that transport you into two distinct eras, allowing you to experience the spirit and creativity of both legendary musicians.

Here’s what you can look forward to this holiday season.

Handel’s home: A Georgian Christmas spectacle

Walking into Handel’s meticulously restored house is like stepping back in time to an era of powdered wigs, candlelight, and sumptuous feasts. For Christmas 2024, each room is adorned with opulent decorations inspired by Handel’s musical legacy.

Jimi Hendrix’s flat: A Swinging Sixties celebration

In stark contrast, Jimi Hendrix’s flat upstairs is decked out for a retro 1960s Christmas. It’s intimate, groovy, and brimming with nostalgia.

Imagine knocking on the door of 23 Brook Street in 1968-69. No gates, no security – just Jimi Hendrix himself answering the door. Most visitors came out of curiosity, drawn by the Handel plaque, not realising Jimi was living upstairs. He welcomed them in, embodying the spirit of an era I would have loved to grow up in – a simpler, friendlier world.

Not-to-miss highlights

A tale of two Legends

The story of these two musicians is compelling in its contrasts and similarities. Handel, who lived here from 1723 until his death in 1759, composed some of the most enduring works in classical music, including Zadok the Priest and Music for the Royal Fireworks. Hendrix, who called the flat his home in 1968-69, was at the forefront of rock innovation, creating timeless hits like Purple Haze and Hey Joe. Both men, in their own way, changed the course of music history.

During my visit, I couldn’t help but imagine what it might have been like to knock on Jimi’s door in 1969. No gates, no security – just the man himself welcoming you in to share stories and songs. It’s this spirit of openness and creativity that the Handel Hendrix House captures so beautifully.
