This weekly photo challenge is deigned to complement our free online photography basics classes. Each week we will set a different theme and your homework is to go out and photograph a collection of images related to that theme.
You can start this challenge whenever you like and do the different themes in any order you see fit. Think of these challenges as a photography workout. Don’t just do them once and not revisit them. If you do start these challenges as you begin our online basics classes then in a few months why not revisit older challenges to see how much better a photographer you have become.
Also try to think outside the box as much as possible. Photography is as much about creative interpretation as it is about technical prowess.

Silhouettes
Sometimes silhouettes are just a happy accident for example when your flash doesn’t fire or you just get your metering wrong but intentional or otherwise they can be very effective images.
There’s a misconception that you need a stunning scene or bright day to create good silhouettes, in fact all you need is a reasonable about of light which can be placed behind the subject. This can be the sun or artificial light. The reason the best silhouettes are taken at sunset are because the light is low and easier to place behind the subject.
Silhouettes don’t have to dominate the frame either. They can be just a small element of a larger scene.
To achieve the best silhoutte effect set your exposure for the background in the scene. The subject in the foreground will then darken.
