Film review: Transformers One starring Chris Hemsworth

Two teenage reporters from London Mums Magazine were thrilled to be invited to review Transformers One. As lifelong fans who grew up surrounded by Transformers movies and toys, they had plenty to say about this latest instalment in the beloved franchise.

The Story

Transformers One takes us way back to where it all began – to the very origins of the Autobots and Decepticons. Directed by Josh Cooley (yes, the genius behind Toy Story 4, another favourite of ours), this animated adventure explores how Optimus Prime and Megatron went from being best buds to sworn enemies. Set on Cybertron, the story gives us an insider’s look at the political drama and personal conflicts that sparked their legendary feud.

We meet young Optimus, voiced by Chris Hemsworth (yes, Thor himself!), who’s still figuring out what it means to be a leader. Meanwhile, Megatron, voiced by Brian Tyree Henry (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), is torn between ambition and loyalty. There’s plenty of action too, with fan favourites like Bumblebee and the fierce Alita, a powerful female Autobot, making sure the story hits all the right notes. Throw in the ever-calculating Shockwave, and you’ve got a recipe for one epic showdown.

The Trailer

From the moment we hit play, the Transformers One trailer screams ‘blockbuster’. The visuals are stunning – we’re talking bold 3D animation that brings Cybertron to life like never before. Think sleek cityscapes, dramatic transformations, and explosions galore!

But it’s not all serious. There’s a good dose of humour (because who doesn’t love a witty one-liner mid-battle?), and the trailer gives us glimpses of lighter moments, perfect for keeping things fun. It’s clear this film is not just about robots bashing each other – it’s about friendships, leadership, and what happens when power goes to someone’s head. We’re hooked already.

The verdict

If you’re a lifelong Transformers fan or someone who’s been dragged to the cinema by your kids, you’ll find something to enjoy in Transformers One. The film’s origin story adds a fresh twist to the franchise, and we finally get to understand what went down between Optimus and Megatron before the big battle began.

Chris Hemsworth absolutely nails the role of Optimus Prime — he brings a younger, more relatable edge to the iconic leader. Meanwhile, Brian Tyree Henry’s Megatron is complex and conflicted, making us see the villain in a whole new light. And of course, the dynamic between these two characters keeps you glued to your seat.

Visually, the movie is a treat. The animation is bold, colourful, and incredibly detailed, making Cybertron look like the coolest (or hottest?) place in the galaxy. The action scenes are fast-paced, but the film balances them with humour and heart, so it’s not all ‘robots in disguise’ and no play.

As teenage fans, we loved it, especially the mix of action and humour — it kept things fun without getting too intense. If you’re a mum who’s secretly a Transformers fan (no judgement here!), or just going along for the ride, there’s plenty to enjoy. Yes, the plot has its deeper moments, but overall, it’s a thrill that’s easy to follow.

London Mums’ Rating: 8/10

Transformers One is a visual spectacle with a story full of heart. Whether you’ve been a fan since the days of toy robots or you’re new to the world of Cybertron, there’s something here for everyone. It’s action-packed, it’s funny, and, best of all, it leaves you rooting for the Autobots all over again.
