Film Review: Peter Rabbit starring James Corden & Domhnall Gleeson

Peter Rabbit is without a shadow of a doubt the most uplifting and sweet quintessentially British family comedy of 2018. My expression is a bit of a mouthful but rightfully so: Peter Rabbit is the sort of movie you want to see with your kids, parents and grandparents because you will all laugh together and share lovely memories of it in the years to come. 

The story

In Peter Rabbit™, the mischievous and adventurous hero who has captivated generations of readers, now takes on the starring role of his own contemporary comedy.

In the film, Peter’s feud with Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) escalates to greater heights than ever before as their fight to gain control of McGregor’s coveted vegetable garden and the affections of the warm-hearted animal lover Bea who lives next door (Rose Byrne) extends to the Lake District and London.

James Corden voices the character of Peter with playful spirit and wild charm, with Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, and Daisy Ridley performing the voice roles of the triplets, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail.

James Corden manages to give Peter Rabbit a particularly naughty voice and personality who is brave but also cheeky and enjoyed upsetting Mr McGregor.  

Gleeson plays the young nephew of Mr McGregor and also hates rabbits but slowly falls in love with Bea. He is torn between upgrading Peter the vegetable-patch security and spending time with his new female friend.

One of the funniest moments is when Peter and Mr McGregor meet at Bea’s house and start fighting behind Bea’s back and stop when she comes back into the room only to be resume their fight every time she leaves the room.

The verdict 

Flopsy (Margot Robbie), Mrs.Tiggy-Winkle (Sia), Peter Rabbit (James Corden) and Benjamin (Matt Lucas) in Columbia Pictures’ PETER RABBIT.

 

The new Beatrix Potter adaptation follows the footsteps of the Paddington movie franchise, which incorporates the best of Britishness, humour aimed at children and adults alike, chasing scenes around London landmarks – in this movie it’s Harrods at the centre of the London journey – using a similar live-action and animation hybrid technique as well as a storyline that makes the original centenarian storyline more contemporary. The mix of humans and animated characters is so well blended that you don’t notice that they are filmed separately. The rabbits talk and walk and jump around wearing their traditional Beatrix Potter coats that makes them such recognisable characters which are the modern version of their 19th century original selves.  

Some of the funniest gags in Peter Rabbit include the cockerel waking up the farm every morning with his very loud chit chat about his thoughts on meaning of life. 

This film is absolutely brilliant it’s a laugh a minute, a bit like Paddington 2. 

Family movies these days are so much better than any other film productions. Film-makers are putting all their money into family animations and movies because it is profitable. At the end of the day a family ticket to the cinema costs on average £50-60 so it is worth it. But families are becoming choosy and picky. There’s so much choice out there. I’d say that Peter Rabbit is worth spending £50 to watch on the big screen. 

 

The storyline is perfect, very well-balanced and pace and there is even a good mix of jokes and educational messages.

 

The quality of the animation of the rabbits in particular is extraordinary. The animals look very realistic. The rabbits’ fur looks so real that you feel you would like to caress it.

The rabbit’s eyes are so full of expression that they seem to have human emotions on their cute little faces.
