Film review: Novocaine – A thrilling blend of action, humour & unexpected twists

On Thursday, 20th March, London Mums Magazine was invited to an exclusive screening of Novocaine at Cineworld, Leicester Square. This action-packed thriller, starring Jack Quaid and Amber Midthunder, delivers an exciting mix of suspense, humour, and unexpected twists that kept the audience engaged from start to finish.

Jack Quaid plays Nate, a shy and socially awkward assistant bank manager whose life outside work is limited to an online gaming friendship. His mundane existence takes a sudden turn when he meets Sherry, a new bank employee played by Amber Midthunder. Sherry’s introduction is anything but conventional – she collides with Nate, causing him to spill a cup of boiling coffee all over himself. However, to everyone’s surprise, Nate appears completely unfazed, revealing a remarkable condition: he is incapable of feeling pain.

Intrigued by Nate, Sherry invites him out for lunch, where they bond over cherry pie – an innocent moment that sets the foundation for their growing connection. As their relationship deepens, their playful late-night conversations turn into something more meaningful, with Nate genuinely falling for Sherry.

The film takes a dramatic turn when the bank is violently robbed by three men disguised as Santa Claus. In the chaos, Sherry is taken hostage, prompting Nate – initially a timid and reserved character – to summon newfound courage and chase after her in a desperate rescue attempt.

As the story unfolds, Nate and Sherry evolve into an unlikely yet compelling duo, repeatedly saving each other from danger. Nate’s inability to feel pain plays a crucial role in their survival, making him almost superhuman as he endures gunshots and stabbings without faltering. Meanwhile, Sherry, initially portrayed as cunning and deceptive, undergoes a transformation of her own. Though she manipulates Nate’s emotions at first, she ultimately redeems herself by rescuing him from her own brother, who has sinister intentions.

With its gripping action sequences, witty humour, and an intriguing premise, Novocaine offers an entertaining cinematic experience. While some plot points may stretch believability, the film’s fast-paced narrative and engaging performances keep viewers invested.

At London Mums Magazine, we rate Novocaine 6/10 – an enjoyable watch with a unique concept, best suited for fans of light-hearted thrillers with a touch of comedy.
