On Monday, 3rd March, London Mums Magazine reporters had the pleasure of attending a screening of Mickey 17 at IMAX Cineworld, Leicester Square. Directed by the Oscar-winning Bong Joon-Ho, best known for Parasite, Mickey 17 has been one of the most anticipated films of the year. In cinemas on 7 March 2025.
The film opens with Earth facing a moral dilemma: the use of experimental cloning to create humans for the betterment of society and the devastating consequences that follow. After the cloning process is banned, a secret organisation seizes the technology for the purpose of space exploration and the colonisation of another planet. In a story reminiscent of Noah’s Ark, a vast group of humans is selected for this monumental journey.
The film’s protagonist, played by Robert Pattinson, joins the mission after being pursued by loan sharks. He inadvertently signs a contract that binds him to the mission, where the company exploits him for their own ends. Pattinson’s character is assigned seemingly impossible tasks, which ultimately lead to death – only for him to be cloned and sent back to complete the next assignment. Upon reaching their new home, the team discovers it is inhabited by an alien species, sparking a potential conflict that could lead to war. Without giving away too much, the film blends dark moments with comical undertones.
While the film has the potential to be a sci-fi epic, it ultimately falls short. The narrative grapples with the idea that humanity views itself as a superior species entitled to conquer new realms, with any other species perceived as the ‘alien’. This theme resonates with current conversations around space exploration and the desire to colonise other planets. Pattinson delivers a standout performance as a man struggling with a split personality, navigating both his existential crisis and the absurdity of his situation.
However, the true star of the show is Mark Ruffalo, famed for his role as the Hulk in the Marvel series. As the supreme leader of the exploration mission, Ruffalo’s farcical dialogue and delivery are a highlight. His character’s bombastic and often ridiculous speeches, whether addressing followers or leading meetings, provide much-needed humour. The character bears a striking resemblance to Donald Trump, which, in light of current global events, adds an ironic and thought-provoking layer to the film.
Despite its missed potential, Mickey 17 is worth watching, if only for Ruffalo’s comedic brilliance.
The buzz surrounding the film, particularly given its director’s previous success with Parasite, created an electric atmosphere prior to the screening. The combination of sci-fi and dark comedy, set against a groundbreaking narrative, offers a fresh take on the genre. The visual effects are stunning, and the performances are impressive, particularly in moments of levity.
At London Mums Magazine, we’ve rated Mickey 17 a solid 7/10.
