Goddess is just what we have been waiting for this Summer! It’s a lovely, fresh, romantic comedy and musical all in one. Directed by Mark Lamprell, Goddess came out in Australia in 2013 and will be on our UK screens on 4th July 2014.
Elspeth Dickens (Laura Michelle Kelly ) dreams of finding her true self despite being stuck in an isolated farmhouse with her naughty twin toddler boys. It’s the story of a mother that is stuck between her children and the ‘high life’ that she is offered the moment a webcam in her kitchen becomes her pathway to fame and fortune….but all this comes at a price. Her funny sink-songs make her a cyber-sensation, but after ‘tasting’ the fun and glory of fame, Elspeth Dickens has to decide between her new career and her family, the twins and world’s whales saver husband James (Roman Keating).
Like in most relationships, the film ends with the couple finding a compromise in order to fulfil both dreams while maintaining a fresh relationship. You could say that Elspeth ‘runaway’ to fame helped her re-conquer her big love: her husband.
Elspeth Dickens has a great voice throughout the film and some of her songs are really ‘addictive’. I’m pretty sure that the public will come out of the cinema signing: ‘Welcome to my kitchen sink, this is where I stop and think, Where I’m sometimes on the brink……. of madness’. You can’t just help signing along to it.
On the other hand Roman Keating only sings a couple of tunes which are beautiful but it would have been nice to listen to more of his voice.
The funniest actress in the film is Magda Szubanski. She does remind me of the cartoon’s villain Ursula from The Little Mermaid, but with a funny side. Magda is an hilarious actress who plays the villain and has such a charismatic way of delivering her role.
Don’t miss this film. You’ll leave the cinema singing along to the hilarious tunes sang by Elspeth all the way home.
