London Mums Magazine was invited to review the new F1 Movie starring Brad Pitt as the main lead. We sent two young F1 enthusiasts to review the movie. This film shows the journey of retired F1 driver Sonny Hayes returning to the sport after 30 years of retirement. He shows a strong desire to continue to race, not for money or fame, but so that he feels alive.
The movie is for big F1 fans – an insight into life as a driver and the exciting obstacles they may face when driving round the F1 life. At the beginning of the movie, we see the driver Sonny Hayes who puts on a facade as a “tough guy,” bossing everyone around and trying to have it his way. Kerry Condon, who plays “Kate,” whose passion is to build and design cars, puts him in his place and reminds him what the Formula 1 sport is all about and how to work as a team.
Sonny, whose dad died when he was 13, likes to act like nothing ever bothers him—but we also learn that Joshua’s dad died when he was also 13, and after this we see a progression of their friendship to becoming better friends.
After Joshua’s accident, when Sonny jumped in to pull him out of the fire, they quickly bonded over their passion and love for F1 racing. They learned to work as a team, pushing each other in their training and working together on the track, making sure they win.
It is really enjoyable to watch their friendship progress, as Sonny pushes Joshua to win – knowing how important it is to him – yet Joshua is also doing the same for Sonny.
The directors used the base of an F2 car, adding an F1 front wing and rear section. They worked alongside Petronas Mercedes AMG and Rodin Motorsports to help make the cars as realistic as possible. APX GP attended the majority of the real F1 races after Silverstone 2023, where the on-track filming started. In the movie, they combine real race footage with the CGI of the APX GP cars to impressively showcase the hard reality of motor racing, and the sheer determination that drivers have to consistently perform every race weekend to the best of their abilities. Utilising real race footage, the producers were able to make APX GP’s participation in F1 feel real.
An amazing movie that everyone would enjoy, especially if they are motorsport fans.
The appearance of real-life F1 personnel such as Toto Wolff, Will Buxton, Guenther Steiner and many more really convinces viewers that APX GP is a real team that competes in F1. The producers also make it easy to understand, through explanations of fresher tyres and purple/yellow sectors, which helps viewers who don’t follow F1 understand the film and the small details better.
