Film Review: Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time starring Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey & Chris Pine

A Wrinkle in Time is Disney’s latest feature film that celebrates female empowerment and diversity and calls for everyone to be ‘warriors who serve the good and light in the universe’ and protect peace and happiness against evil forces such as envy and jealousy that threaten the world. A Wrinkle in Time’s screenplay is Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s award-winning timeless classic young adult fantasy novel, which was first published in 1962.  

The story  

Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time  is an epic adventure which takes audiences across dimensions of time and space,  examining the nature of darkness versus light and, ultimately, the triumph of love. Through one girl’s transformative journey led by three celestial guides, we discover that strength comes from embracing one’s individuality and that the best way to triumph over fear is to travel by one’s own light.

The verdict  

A Wrinkle in Time has cast some of Hollywood’s most popular stars to sprinkle the magic over families across the world this Easter including Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine and Storm Reid. 
 

The three celestial beings, Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) in Disney’s A WRINKLE IN TIME, an epic adventure directed by Ava DuVernay and bsed on Madeleine L’Engle’s timeless classic which takes audiences across dimensioins of time and space, examining the nature of darkness versus light and ultimately, the triumph of love.

 
Directed by Ava DuVernay, A Wrinkle in Time follows  a stubborn and lonely tween called Meg who goes on the search for her scientist father. She comes across three peculiar beings who send her, her brother and her friend to space in order to find him. The story is fascinating and you can expect lots of adventures from this movie that is aimed at tweens – the protagonist is 12, too. It looks like Disney wanted to make a movie to inspire girls who would want to follow in Meg’s footsteps.
 

Storm Reid is Meg Murry, Deric McCabe is Charles Wallace Murry and Reese Witherspoon is Mrs. Whatsit in Disney’s A WRINKLE IN TIME.

 
The film is certainly inspiring and imaginative at times, however the plot is often too convoluted to convey such a simple and beautiful message. 

My favourite character was Reese Witherspoon’s cheeky character, a strange woman named Mrs. Whatsit. She demystifies some dialogues which would otherwise  be unbearably cheesy. She often saves the movie with her presence.

The other two fairies, Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey) and also very good. They are there to take the children onto a fantastic journey through the universe via “tesseracts”, blurry parts of time and space that allow you to travel around planets. 

 

It’s quite complicated but basically it’s like a fancy time travelling through space. 
 
The movie is often slow but the fairies’ costume and make up changes are fabulous. Oprah Winfrey changed her sparkly eyebrows at every change of scenery.

This movie heavily uses CGI to create magical special effects. The colours are so vibrant your eyes are almost drugged by the strong reds and yellows of some flying flowers on an almost fluorescent green meadow,. In the credits there were lots of Visual effects companies involved including Lucas film that makes the Star Wars films.
 
Sometimes A Wrinkle in Time reminded me of Neverending Story (an iconic movie from the Eighties that I remembered watching in 1984) particularly when Mrs. Whatsit transforms into a flower plant dragon and takes the children on a flying ride. 
 
What a truly loved about A Wrinkle in Time is its soundtrack, particularly the Song ‘flower of the universe’ sung by Sade, another icon from the 80s. 
A positive note about A Wrinkle in Time is that it will inspire tweens to go home and read Madeleine L’Engle books.

A Wrinkle in Time opens in UK cinemas on the 23rd March 2018.
