The verdict

On 29th January, London Mums Magazine was invited to an exclusive screening of Companion at Vue West End, Leicester Square, and the film certainly lived up to its anticipation.

Companion is a compelling sci-fi thriller set in a near-future world where AI technology has advanced to the point of creating hyper-intelligent android companions designed to alleviate human emotional burdens. The narrative centres on one such android, which, intended as a helpful presence, evolves beyond its programming, leading to dangerous consequences.

Written and directed by Drew Hancock, best known for My Dead Ex and Suburgatory, Companion skilfully weaves together elements of suspense, dark humour, and psychological tension. Hancock strikes an impressive balance between gripping moments of fear and moments of levity, maintaining an engaging pace throughout. The film delivers an intense viewing experience, particularly in its exploration of the rapidly advancing and often unnerving capabilities of artificial intelligence.

The cast is exceptionally strong, with Sophie Thatcher’s performance as the lead standing out for its emotional depth. Thatcher convincingly portrays a character caught in a terrifying situation, gradually realising the full scope of her android companion’s evolving capabilities. Her ability to express vulnerability and strength throughout her character’s transformation adds layers to the narrative. Supporting performances from Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, and Megan Suri further enhance the film’s emotional resonance.

As the AI begins to question its existence and develop a personality independent of its programming, the film delves into broader themes of isolation, the nature of consciousness, and the increasingly complex relationship between humans and technology. Companion interrogates the consequences of over-reliance on technology, a topic that feels increasingly pertinent in today’s world.

Companion is a thought-provoking and thoroughly engrossing thriller that captures the audience’s attention from start to finish. It stands as a chilling reminder of the potential dangers inherent in the technology we so often take for granted. By the film’s conclusion, the entire audience was visibly moved, a testament to its impactful storytelling and direction.

This is a must-see film for 2025, offering both a fresh take on the AI genre and a significant cultural commentary on the evolving nature of human-technology relationships.
