Film review: Comandante starring Pierfrancesco Favino

Comandante (The Commander in English) by Edoardo De Angelis is a majestic cinematic masterpiece rooted in the true story of corvette captain Salvatore Todaro, a man who, during World War II, distinguished himself with an extraordinary act of humanity amidst the horrors of war. The film manages to convey the drama of those events intensely and empathetically, immersing the viewer in the dangers and tensions of a submarine at war, as well as in the emotional and moral depths of its protagonists.

Far from fantasy, Comandante offers an authentic narrative rich in reflexions on human nature and Italian national identity. Through Todaro’s story, the film presents a luminous image of the Italian people, highlighting their dedication to the law of the sea and their commitment to aiding the weak, despite the harsh laws of war.

Director De Angelis and screenwriter Sandro Veronesi craft a nuanced and compelling plot, full of shades and emotional intensity. The sequences aboard the submarine convey the claustrophobia and drama of the environment, while the moments of confrontation between the characters reveal their contradictions and deep motivations.

At the heart of the narrative is the figure of Captain Todaro, masterfully portrayed by Pierfrancesco Favino, who manages to embody all the complexity and humanity of this atypical hero. Favino brings to the screen a character tormented by his choices but determined to follow his conscience and values, despite the pressures of the fascist regime and the laws of war.

Comandante is not just a film about war but also a powerful tale of the strength of humanity and the ability to resist injustices. Through Todaro’s story, the film reminds us that even in the darkest moments of history, it is possible to find the light of hope and human solidarity.

De Angelis’s direction stands out for its refinement and its ability to immerse the viewer in the emotional depths of the characters. The scenes aboard the submarine are expertly shot, conveying to the audience the constant tension and danger of being at sea during wartime.

Comandante is a cinematic masterpiece that manages to touch the viewer’s emotional chords and offer an authentic and engaging portrayal of Salvatore Todaro’s story. A must-see film for lovers of auteur cinema and those interested in the history of World War II and Italian identity.

Comandante will be shown at Cinema Made in Italy at Cine Lumiere in South Kensington this week.
