We’ve all been there – staring at a tiny cabin bag, trying to figure out how to fit in everything we think we need for a weekend away. With stricter airline luggage rules and rising fees, packing smart has become a necessity – not just a preference. Low-cost airlines are tightening hand luggage restrictions even further, typically allowing only one small bag per passenger that fits under the seat in front. This is often a small bag like a laptop bag or purse, with dimensions around 40 x 20 x 25 cm. Larger carry-on bags are usually a paid extra. But don’t worry – we London Mums are nothing if not clever with our space (you’ve seen our changing bags!). Whether you’re off on a romantic weekend, a solo recharge trip, or a family break, these tried-and-tested packing tips will help you pack light and travel stress-free – all while looking effortlessly stylish.
As a London mum who travels often (sometimes with my 18 year old son, sometimes for a cheeky solo escape), I’ve learnt the art of packing light the hard way – after dragging a way-too-heavy bag through Rome’s cobbled street (full of sanpetrini) in Italy, a nasty fall last summer and swearing never again! These tips have saved me time, money, and sore shoulders. Now I can zip off for a weekend with just my underseat bag – and still feel fabulous (I went to Milan for 3 days this Spring to Jovanotti’s gig with just a small backpack).
10 Packing tips from a travel-savvy London Mum
1. Go Dark, Stay Chic
Darker clothes are your best friend when space is tight – they hide stains, look smart, and don’t scream “recycled outfit,” even if you’re on day three of the same trousers!
2. Solid Toiletries Only
Solid shampoo bars and deodorant sticks are travel gold – less mess, more space, and no last-minute airport bin drama when your liquids bag won’t zip shut. I even keep a little travel set ready to grab and go.
3. Wear the Bulky Stuff
I always fly in my trainers, hoodie and jacket – not just to save space, but to keep warm on over-air-conditioned planes. Layers are your best mate.
4. Just One Pair of Shoes (Maybe Two)
Stick with a comfy, stylish pair that can take you from sightseeing to supper. If I really need heels, I choose a tiny pair and stuff socks and small bits inside them.
5. Roll Everything
Rolling clothes not only saves space but means fewer creases. My daughter actually taught me this after watching a packing video – and she was right!
6. Pack Like a Puzzle
Start with heavier things at the bottom – trousers, jumpers – and build up with lighter items like t-shirts. Use every nook and cranny – I wedge things into shoes and the corners of the bag.
7. Bring a Foldable Tote
A fold-up tote is brilliant for daytime outings and sneaky souvenir shopping. I always keep one tucked in my bag – perfect for beach towels, snacks, or nappies if I’ve got the little one in tow.
8. Go for a Capsule Wardrobe
Think mix-and-match: two tops, two bottoms, one jumper, one jacket. Neutral tones are your best bet – you can always jazz things up with earrings or a bright scarf.
9. Little Bags Inside Big Bag
I use sandwich bags or zip pouches to separate things – underwear in one, cables and chargers in another. You don’t want to be rummaging in public looking for a phone cable!
10. Skip the “Just In Case” Syndrome
If you’re packing something just in case, ask yourself: would I wear this at home? If the answer’s no, leave it out. I’ve never once regretted not bringing a third pair of sandals!
