Preparing your little one for their first ballet lesson

Starting ballet lessons is an exciting time for everyone, children as well as parents, but how can you prepare your little one for their first class?

We spoke to Julie Hurley, from Dancewearcentral.co.uk and asked her to share her top tips on how to make sure your child is as prepared as possible for that all important first ballet lesson.

Check they have the right dance clothes

This may sound like an obvious one, but it’s important to make sure that your child has the correct ballet uniform prior to their first class. However, most ballet teachers are happy for beginners to come without uniform for the first couple of lessons. It always depends on your child’s dance school.

Uniforms for ballet classes vary, especially for younger groups. Some classes are strict with their uniforms, and ask that all pupils have dance-wear from certain brands, whilst others are more liberal and allow pupils to choose the colour and style of their leotard.

Some classes even encourage little ballerinas to wear princess or fairy costumes, providing that they will not get in the way of the dance steps.

If in doubt, call the dance school and ask what is suitable for your child to wear to their first lesson. If you can’t get hold of this information, then a leotard is your best bet, however make sure your child’s hair is tied up off their face, so it’s not disturbing them while dancing.

Invest in some good quality ballet shoes

Again, this depends on which dance school your child is enrolled in. Some schools ask that you purchase a specific brand of ballet shoe for your child, some are more lenient.

Julie  says: “I would advise that you purchase a good fitting pair of ballet shoes for your child, even if they are just starting out in the world of ballet. This is because well fitted shoes will provide your child with more comfort and their feet will thank you for them!”
Get your kids excited
Attending their first ballet class is bound to be a very exciting time for your child, and let’s face it, parents are sometimes more nervous than their children.

Your child’s first ballet class will be fun, and they will make lots of new friends.

TOP TIP: To make you and your child’s transition into the class easier, look into what they will be allowed to take with them. What about a toy from home to keep them at ease during their first few classes?

Remember: The most important thing about your child starting ballet is that they enjoy it and have fun!
