Intensive outpatient programme: Who can benefit?

Intensive Outpatient Programmes are a huge benefit to those suffering from addiction. A combination of experience, patience and a wealth of services is what separates this process from the others. Resources are key to beating addiction, and this is where you can go to get everything started.

The Hard Road

Believe it or not, the hard road is actually IOP treatment therapies. There is no easy road when it comes to beating addiction. An Intensive Outpatient Program will help you set up and achieve your goals, but the ultimate contribution will always come from your end. This may be the most difficult lesson to learn, but is an easy one to grasp with time. That is why the most successful patients of an IOP are those that participate with an open mind. If you are going to rehab to put in the work to beat addiction, then there is a solid chance you will succeed. But if you consider IOP a place where you can sleepwalk into a recovered state, then there will be less of a benefit.

The Easy Road

It was mentioned before that there is no easy road. The easy road is a mentality that has to be overcome before you see the effectiveness of an Intensive Outpatient Program. Professionals can help with many things, but your attitude towards the program is always going to be a personal struggle.

Sometimes addiction gets so overwhelming that you want to believe it is over. This can lead to situations where you go through hot and cold spells of getting over a substance. Trying to self-medicate or cold turkey your way out of addiction is not the easy road. And entering an IOP with the mindset of it being the easiest road is an equally bad mistake. There are some patients that outgrow this mindset after being in the program for a while. But those that stick to the ‘easy road’ mindset are susceptible to dangerous relapses.

When Reality Hits

It is unrealistic to expect someone to know when they need to enter an IOP. You can nudge them in the right direction, but sticking to it depends on how much they want to get better. And that is pretty much the core of it all – wanting to get better. IOP is successful because it is filled with patients that want to better themselves physically and mentally. Stick to the schedule, and both individuals and groups can show remarkable treatment success.

If you are still having doubts, take a look in the mirror and ask yourself how you feel about addiction. Identify personal goals that you want to meet, and then ask yourself if it is possible while still being addicted. Once you stop fighting with this conflict of interest, an IOP will become much more attractive as a program option. This will put you in the right mindset to begin the road to success.

Choose Your Path

There is only one road to beating addiction, and it goes through you. Understanding your goals is just as important as meeting them. Once you beat addiction, it is a success unlike any other.
