Cocktail recipe: Cuba Libre

The Cuba Libre is more than just a cocktail – it’s a symbol of celebration, history, and simplicity. With its perfect blend of rum, cola, and lime, this drink is easy to make and packed with flavour. Ideal for casual gatherings or a moment of relaxation, the Cuba Libre is a timeless classic.

Cocktail recipe: Cuba Libre

Ingredients (for 1 serving)

  • 50ml light or dark rum (depending on your preference. I usually make it with dark rum but lately I tried it with BACARDÍ Carta Blanca rum and I enjoyed it very much as it is more refreshing)
  • 100ml cola (chilled)
  • Juice of ½ a lime
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wedges for garnish

Method

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
  2. Squeeze the juice of half a lime into the glass.
  3. Pour the rum over the ice and lime juice.
  4. Top up with chilled cola, leaving a little room to stir.
  5. Gently stir to combine the flavours.
  6. Garnish with a wedge of lime for a zesty finish.

Tips for the Perfect Cuba Libre

  • Choose your rum wisely: A light rum gives a crisp and refreshing flavour, while dark rum adds depth and complexity.
  • Use fresh lime juice: This is key to balancing the sweetness of the cola with a bright citrusy kick.
  • Chill your cola: This ensures a refreshing experience without watering down the drink.

Serving Suggestion

The Cuba Libre pairs wonderfully with savoury snacks like crispy plantain chips, roasted peanuts, or a charcuterie board. Whether you’re relaxing at home or hosting a party, this cocktail is sure to impress.

Raise your glass, shout “¡Salud!” and enjoy the refreshing taste of the Caribbean.

A bit of history on this cocktail

The Cuba Libre cocktail, which translates to “Free Cuba” in Spanish, carries a rich historical and cultural significance. Its name originates from the late 19th century during the Cuban War of Independence (1895–1898), a period when Cubans were fighting to liberate their country from Spanish colonial rule.

After the war, in 1898, the United States played a pivotal role in securing Cuban independence during the Spanish-American War. Around this time, American soldiers stationed in Havana began mixing Cuban rum with their newly imported Coca-Cola, a soft drink that had recently gained popularity in the U.S. To enhance the flavour, they added a squeeze of lime. This refreshing concoction quickly became a favourite amongst locals and soldiers alike.

Legend has it that the name Cuba Libre was born in a Havana bar when a group of U.S. soldiers toasted to a free and independent Cuba. They raised their glasses of rum, cola, and lime, shouting “¡Por Cuba Libre!” (For a free Cuba!). The phrase not only reflected the cocktail’s Cuban origins but also symbolised the patriotic sentiment of the time.

Over the years, the Cuba Libre has evolved into a global cocktail classic. Its simplicity and refreshing flavour have made it a popular choice at bars and gatherings, while its name serves as a reminder of Cuba’s struggle for freedom and its enduring cultural identity.
