Skin emotions: Why how we feel about our skin really matters

As busy mums juggling work, family, and the daily whirlwind of life, taking time to care for our skin often falls to the bottom of the list. But how we feel about our skin can have a surprisingly powerful impact on our emotional wellbeing and confidence. Skin isn’t just our outer shell – it’s the body’s largest organ, making up around 8% of our body weight. And yet, many of us don’t give it the attention it deserves, basically we don’t listen to our skin emotions. When we neglect our skin, we may begin to feel disconnected from it, which in turn affects how we feel about ourselves. After all, there’s a strong emotional link between skin health and mental health.

The Confidence Connection

Studies show that when women feel good about their skin, they’re more likely to feel positive, confident, and ready to face the day. On the flip side, feeling unhappy with how our skin looks can lead to lower self-esteem, avoidance of social events, and even emotional distress.

Dr Nisa Aslam notes the clear link between skin and mood:

Summer Skincare: More Than Just Sunscreen

During summer, taking care of our skin becomes even more essential. The sun’s rays can be both uplifting and damaging. Dr Hilary Jones shared some worrying findings:

Sun exposure can cause more than just wrinkles and fine lines — it can also lead to serious skin conditions, including skin cancer. Protecting your skin should never be optional.

Our Pick: Hada Labo SPF 50 Sun Care

If you’re unsure where to start, we’ve found a brilliant product to recommend. Hada Labo — literally “Skin Lab” in Japanese—offers one of the best SPF 50 sun creams on the market. Their water-resistant moisturising formula is lightweight, non-sticky, and soothing for both face and body. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid for deep hydration while protecting against harmful UV rays that can damage skin cells at the DNA level.

The range includes two targeted products: one for the face, one for the body—ideal for mums who need effective and fuss-free skincare that actually feels good on the skin.

Your skin is not a luxury—it’s your armour. Treat it with the care it deserves and you might find yourself smiling more often, walking a little taller, and saying “yes” to that social invite you’d have otherwise declined.

Visit the Hada Labo website for more skincare tips, and remember: your skin deserves your love—inside and out.
