Gig Review: Noahfinnce ’s Halloween Special at Gibson Garage

Attending Noahfinnce ’s Halloween gig at Gibson Garage last night was like stepping into a livewire mosh pit of raw energy and rebellious spirit. For anyone nostalgic for the days of the Sex Pistols or Nirvana, yet keen on a fresh twist, this was a phenomenal show. Noahfinnce’s sound is a raucous blend of punk rock and grunge with a sharp, modern edge – like Everclear with a dash more bite. From the moment he stepped on stage, the audience, mostly a mix of teens and their enthusiastic parents, was fully in his thrall.

Noahfinnce (aka Noah Finn Adams) has cultivated a following not only for his music but also for his authenticity and outspokenness. A proud advocate and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Noah brings themes of identity and resilience to the forefront, lending a voice to issues often unexplored in mainstream music. His songs, like the head-banging Scumbag, speak directly to experiences of marginalisation and self-discovery, tackling hard-hitting themes with a humour that keeps them both accessible and potent.

One thing that truly stands out is Noah’s charisma; his humour and offbeat commentary had the crowd laughing one moment and head-banging the next. Tracks from his album Growing Up on the Internet – an electrifying blend of electro-rock and arena punk – showcase not only his grit but his gift for catchy choruses. From Rise and Grind, which cheekily pokes fun at hustle culture, to the angst-fuelled Alexithymia, Noah brings a playful edge to serious topics, making the live experience feel as much like a conversation as a performance.

For parents, the appeal lies partly in the nostalgic elements of Noah’s music – his unapologetic punk ethos and old-school rock riffs. But it’s also in the connection he’s building with his fans through relatable lyrics that resonate with both younger audiences and those of us who grew up on punk rock. With his quick rise to fame and his growing influence, Noahfinnce seems set to become a key voice in British alternative music.

And for those who missed last night? You’re in luck! Noahfinnce will be back in London on 13 November 2024, playing at the Electric Ballroom in Camden. Don’t miss this chance to see the next wave of punk rebellion live – it’s a gig both you and your teens won’t want to miss.

The Velvet Hands

November 14 (2:00-3:00pm)

https://www.thevelvethands.co.uk/

The Velvet Hands are Toby Mitchell, Dan Able, Louis Mitchell and John Logan. After forming amidst Cornwall’s blistering garage-rock scene, the four-piece relocated to London and have been making a name for themselves on the capital’s underground guitar circuit ever since.

Praised as being “full of bolshy spirit” by NME, the band’s self-recorded debut album was Huw Stephens’ “Album Of The Week” on Radio 1. Gaining airplay on Radio X, BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing amongst others, the band have also supported the likes of Fontaines D.C., VANT, Wallows, Frank Turner, Paul Weller and Liam Gallagher.

Hand-picked by Michael Eavis to support Elbow at the 2022 instalment of the infamous Pilton Party, the band have played Boardmasters, Y Not, Truck, The Great Estate, Isle of Wight, Leopolooza festivals and more. In April 2023 they supported Trampoline on their national tour. They performed live off the top of a yellow US School Bus at The Great Estate Festival in Cornwall and headlined a stage at The Truck Festival.

The band released their second album Sucker Punch (KrautPop) to widespread praise. Delivering coming-of-age tales with slacker-rock sensibilities, the album combined the punchy guitar licks of The Strokes with rousing punk choruses reminiscent of The Clash and The Vaccines.

More recently, they announced that they will headline Dingwall’s London on March 22, 2025, they have also been announced as support to Hard Fi at their sold out Roundhouse gig on November 30, 2024.The band played and sold out Supersonic in Paris in March 2023 and April 2024.Their single, “Chick Habit,” a Serge Gainsbourg cover, received support from French radio.

The third album from The Velvet Hands is scheduled for release in Spring 2025.

Welsh soul artist Nia Wyn has a talent for raw and powerful storytelling. Growing up in a small town in North Wales, Nia struggled with mental illness, isolation and confusion around her identity, taking solace in old records she found and playing guitar in her room. Inspired by the soul that came out of Philadelphia, Memphisand Detroit in the 60s and 70s, Nia writes, produces and sings songs about modern issues: being queer, the hard times young people face in the UK, as well as mental health and autism. After signing with TRUST Artists for bookings and Think Music for sync representation, Nia is focusing on her forthcoming debut album A Pleasure To Have In Class releasing on February 21, 2025 that will see her return to her roots of influence. Nia’s prior achievements include supporting Paul Welleron his sold out UK tour, performing at Glastonbury Festival, Latitude Festival and Lytham Festival, and sync placements on FIFA 21 and Shondaland’s Station 19.
