Imperial War Museum new look after £40m revamp – Reopening from 19 July 2014

In 2014 lots of WW1 anniversary celebrations are taking place across the UK and Europe and as a parent I feel it’s my responsibility to teach my son all about WW1 and WW2. The school is also helping out explaining history in a simple way which is important to understand current issues and political scenarios. But I believe the new interactive look of the Imperial War Museum will certainly help children as well as parents to understand what happened during these crucial events in the last century.

The Imperial War Museum has received a £40 million revamp including restructuring the bright atrium which now includes significant airplanes such as the Spitfire, as well as a press agency Reuters jeep, wreckage of a military vehicle and other big guns and rockets.  Imperial War Museum

The Great War has a focal point in the new interactive area.  The WW1 section includes 1300 never seen before – artefacts, letters, amazing posters which were communication  tools with the population (call for war, for support etc) – and interactive lessons utilising the latest touch screen technologies. August 2014 marks 100 years since the start of WW1 and the opening of the exhibition Truth and Memory: British Art of the First World War.
Among all the artefacts there are many interesting ones showcasing women’s participation in the war as they took new roles in factories, hospitals, transport and other areas. Women were essential to support the weaker population waiting for their soldier’s back home in supplying food and shelter.

The museum reopens on Saturday 19th July 2014 from 10am. It’s a highly recommended activity for families. And it is FREE!
On top of this, as part of this year’s celebrations, on 16 September at 7pm there will be a ticketed event called In Conversation with Kate Adie: The Legacy of Women in the First World War exploring the role and legacy of women in WW1. Certainly a great opportunity to check out how London Mums lived during WW1.
