Keeping pets calm during fireworks

With Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve on the horizon, fireworks season can be stressful for pets. Emma Hammett, first aid expert at London Mums Magazine and director of First Aid for Life, shares her top strategies to help keep your pets calm and comfortable during this time.

Set Up a Safe Space

One of the best ways to reduce anxiety for pets during fireworks is by creating a secure space where they can retreat. Dogs feel safe in cosy beds or tucked behind furniture, while cats often prefer high, covered areas where they can observe their surroundings. “Using blankets, cardboard boxes, or beds with covers can provide pets with a sense of safety, shielding them from bright lights and muffling loud noises,” advises Hammett.

Mask Sounds with Music

Music can be incredibly calming for pets during fireworks. Hammett recommends playing soft classical music or using playlists specifically designed for pets, which can be found on streaming platforms like Spotify and YouTube. If you have outdoor pets, bring them inside for the evening and keep them in a quiet room with drawn curtains to block flashes and reduce noise.

Gradual Exposure

Hammett also advocates for gradual exposure to firework sounds, which can help pets become more comfortable with the noises. Start by playing recorded fireworks sounds at a low volume while your pet relaxes in their favourite spot, then slowly increase the volume over time. “This approach works for many pets, allowing them to associate the sounds with a calm environment,” she explains.

Keep Pets Occupied with Toys

Providing engaging toys and distractions can help ease pets’ anxiety. Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing Kongs, or chew sticks can keep dogs busy, while cats may enjoy chasing laser pointers or playing with feather toys. “Keeping pets occupied helps take their mind off the noises outside and reduces stress,” says Hammett.

Consult Your Vet

If your pet experiences severe anxiety, consult your vet for additional support. Vets can recommend calming aids, such as pheromone diffusers, CBD products, or medication. Hammett emphasises, “For pets with heightened sensitivity, speaking with a vet can be essential to find the most effective solution.”

By using these practical tips from Emma Hammett, you can help your pets stay calm and comfortable during fireworks season.
