Richmond town centre is set to become a focal point for art and conservation as it launches the Chimps are Family statue trail by renowned artists Gillie and Marc. This initiative, organised by Be Richmond, aims to raise awareness about chimpanzee conservation in partnership with WWF.
Starting from Friday, 12th July 2024, residents and visitors can follow a designated chimp footprint trail through Richmond, searching for 290 hidden chimp toys scattered along the route. Each toy represents one of the approximately 290,000 chimpanzees left in the wild, making it a poignant reminder of the need for conservation efforts. The trail concludes on Sunday, coinciding with World Chimpanzee Day.
Be Richmond, the Business Improvement District for Richmond town centre, has collaborated with WWF to support the conservation of chimpanzees and their habitats. As part of the campaign, participants are encouraged to photograph the chimps they find and share them on social media using #BeWildinRichmond. For every post, Be Richmond will donate £1 to WWF on behalf of the participant.
Anna Bromley, Marketing Manager for Be Richmond, highlighted the community’s excitement: “Richmond is thrilled to host the Chimps are Family installation. This trail not only brings art and education together but also strengthens our commitment to wildlife conservation.”
The bronze chimp statues, crafted with artistic finesse by Gillie and Marc, will grace Richmond for the next 12 months. Each statue tells a unique story about chimpanzee society and their natural habitats, aiming to educate and inspire visitors.
This initiative is part of Be Richmond’s broader mission to promote the local business community and enhance the shopping experience in Richmond town centre. By attracting visitors to the trail, organisers hope to create a vibrant atmosphere that benefits both residents and tourists alike.
