The verdict

The film ‘Wish’ is a celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary. Directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, it follows the journey of Asha, a young idealist voiced by Ariana DeBose. The movie pays tribute to Disney’s rich history, featuring references and callbacks to past Disney movies.

The animation style in ‘Wish’ is inspired by early Disney classics like ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs‘ (1937). Familiar faces from the Disney universe and a subtle shout-out to Mickey Mouse add to the nostalgic charm.

Chris Buck, the co-director, counted “over a hundred” Disney nods in the film, showcasing the film-makers’ dedication. The narrative serves as an ode to Disney’s timeless classics, with Asha’s wish on a star drawing parallels to ‘Pinocchio‘ (1940).

Asha’s sidekick, Star, is inspired by Mickey Mouse, adding charm to the story. In a heart-warming gesture, Disney collaborated with Visa to support Make-A-Wish UK during special preview screenings. Ariana DeBose surprised families, revealing that the wishes of three Make-A-Wish UK children would come true.

Disney’s ‘Wish’ is a testament to the enduring legacy of the studio. Its nostalgic references, meticulous animation, and real-world impact make it a noteworthy addition to Disney’s repertoire. As the studio celebrates its 100th birthday, ‘Wish’ stands as a commemorative milestone, blending the old and the new in a harmonious symphony of animation.
