Film review: Boxing Day

Boxing Day is an uplifting family Christmas movie! With jubilant characters!

The story

Melvin, a British author living in America, returns home to London for the holidays to introduce his American fiancee (Lisa) to his eccentric British-Caribbean family. Their relationship is put to the test, as she discovers the world Melvin left behind revolves around his ex-girlfriend (Georgia), who is now an international pop star!

The cast

Aml Ameen, Aja Naomi King, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Tamara Lawrance, Sheyi Cole, Samson Kayo, Joshua Maloney, Lisa Davina Phillip, Claire Skinner, Stephen Dillane

The verdict

There were good moments, but the majority of the characters in each story didn’t get enough development for me to get emotionally invested enough to care, resulting in my laughing at the movie far more than with it.

Boxing Day is mainly a rom-com with plenty of black humour. I didn’t think it was very festive and would have been better shot in summer as London is beautiful all year round.

London Mums’ rating: 5/10
