Today cinemas re-open after over a year in lockdown and what a cracker of a movie to go back to the big screen. This morning I attended a special press screening of Peter Rabbit 2 – whose release has been delayed for a year – starring Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson, David Oyelowo, Elizabeth Debicki, Margot Robbie and James Corden as Peter Rabbit. A perfect mix of CGI and live action, Peter Rabbit 2 – The Runaway is filled with gags from beginning to end as well as smart and witty dialogues that will appeal both children and parents alike. Peter Rabbit 2 hops into cinemas today.
The story
In Peter Rabbit 2 the lovable rogue is back. Bea, Thomas, and the rabbits have created a makeshift family, but despite his best efforts, Peter can’t seem to shake his mischievous reputation. Adventuring out of the garden, Peter finds himself in a world where his mischief is appreciated, but when his family risks everything to come looking for him, Peter must figure out what kind of bunny he wants to be.

The verdict
To lovers of Beatrix Potter’s classic books, Peter Rabbit 2 is the perfect family film. While I liked the first Peter Rabbit film, I absolutely loved the sequel. Using endless smart gags, this movie sheds light into how the publishing industry often transforms characters and authors into franchises to make money. On the other hand, Lake District writer and illustrator Bea Potter (played by Rose Byrne) says she’d spin in her grave rather than have her books turned into a “sassy hip feste” that “someone, probably an American” can “boorishly capitalise on”. Her pure take is refreshing and we all root for her simple countryside stories.
James Corden as the voice of Peter Rabbit surpasses himself in this sequel as he turns a wild creature into a witty and mischievous rabbit with a big heart – without becoming ‘cheesy’ – and a toned-down attitude which makes him an even more lovable character (if that is ever possible).
