Picture book of the week: Together by Luke Adam Hawker

Personally I want this pandemic to end as soon as possible and forget these challenging times once and for all. I certainly would not want to read about it or to listen to songs about lockdown. But there’s an exception to this: Together – published by Kyle Books tomorrow – is a beautifully illustrated book by Luke Adam Hawker that highlights all the meaningful connections we have made during such a challenging time.

Together takes a philosophical look at the events of 2020. Using the metaphor of a monumental storm, we follow a man and his dog through the uncertainty and change that it brings to their lives.

‘Dark clouds were looming in the distance. We watched them gather, and we wondered… When will it come? How long will it last?’
Through their eyes we see the difficulties of being apart, the roller-coaster of emotions that we have all shared, and the realisation that by pulling together we can move forward with a new perspective, hope and an appreciation of what matters most in life.

Artist Luke Adam Hawker began his career as a designer before becoming a full time artist back in 2015. Since then he has focussed on drawing on location, fascinated with the world around him and how drawing can help us connect with both places and people.

The lockdown of 2020 suddenly limited Luke’s ability to travel. Like many of us he spent months at home, and this new restricted way of life inspired a new introspective way of drawing, helping him understand and depict the day to day effects of the extraordinary challenges unfolding across the world.

I love Luke Adam Hawker’s instagram account as he shares his lovely drawings in the making @lukeadamhawker.com. His website is www.lukeadamhawker.com
