If you like Dracula and monster comedies, you will enjoy Monster Family. This truly global family adventure features an all-star voice cast, including Emily Watson (On Chesil Beach), Jason Isaacs (The Death of Stalin), Nick Frost (The Huntsman: Winter’s War), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), Celia Imrie (Bridget Jones’s Diary) and Catherine Tate (Doctor Who). Monster Family is out in cinemas and on Sky Cinema simultaneously from today.
The story
Based on David Safier’s best-selling novel, Monster Family follows the very much unhappy Wishbone clan, Frank, Emma and their kids Max and Fay – under pressure and constantly at each other’s throats.
When they are cursed by an evil witch and transformed into their own monstrous party costumes, they must pull together to battle real-life beasts; reverse the curse; and prove that even a vampire, a mummy, a werewolf, and Frankenstein’s monster can eventually form one big happy family.
When the Wishbones snap, only love can stitch them back together… Watch a Monster Family become human again in 2018.

The verdict
Watching how the four members of the Wishbone family get at each other’s throats may remind you of a deja-vu scenario in your own life. Everybody has experienced some kind of unhappy family situations at some point. This is the starting point in this first Sky Cinema animation. The adventure that follows might not be entirely original but the gags and the voice performances are enjoyable enough to keep both kids and adults glued to their seats for one hour and 30 minutes. There are all the ingredients of a Halloween movie only shown in the Spring including a terrible curse, an evil witch, Halloween costumes, a vampire, a mummy, a werewolf, Frankenstein and a singing and dancing Dracula. Monster Family is the perfect movie to watch on a rather cold and snowy March weekend.
Watch this space for my interview with newcomer Ethan Rouse, who voices the boy transformed into a little sweet werewolf.
