Embracing Hashtags in Google+

Google’s annual developer focussed conference Google I/O was held in San Francisco last month and there were some fascinating product keynotes including a major upgrade to Google Plus with 41 new features.

One of those new features was the introduction of hashtags on the Google+ social media platform.

Hashtags or ‘the pound sign’ as we used to call it before hashtags became popular on Twitter in resent years are a great way to organise and find stuff on social networks. With so much noise you need something to categorise your content and hashtags do just that.

If you are new to Google+ or are still trying to find your feet then the first hashtag you show search for is #googleplustips

What makes Google+ hashtag search so mush better?

It’s the way that you can search within your stream without leaving it which I think is brilliant.

Here’s an example of how the hashtags are highlighted in your posts.

How hastags appear on Google+

Here’s how you can flip through related posts.

Once you have explored those you can see related hashtags (still within your stream)

Then if you want to go deeper there are plenty of extra options in the main search area. You can search People and Places related to the hashtag or explore Communities, Google+ posts, photos, events and hangouts.
