Tween girls pick art as favourite school subject this new term

More than 100,000 girls in the UK, US and France responded to the Back to School survey run by GirlsGoGames social gaming platforms in just a few days! The idea behind was to find out how girls in the UK, US and France are feeling about going back to school after their summer break. It turns out that while some passions are universal (cookies, art and the social side of school), attitudes to school vary between countries.

44% of girls in the US are excited about the beginning of term, closely followed by UK girls at 39%.

In contrast, the French are less enthusiastic about going back to school, with 29% saying that they’re stressed about their first day.

Comments added below the survey on our sites show the conflicting emotions girls are feeling. One UK girl, who plays on GirlsGoGames, commented, “I love school and I miss my friends when I’m away from it,” while another one said, “I’m going to be in year 6. I’m excited and nervous at the same time but I can’t wait.”

When it comes to style and attitude, almost half the US girls plan to dress to stand out from the rest of their classmates. This differs to girls in the UK who wear school uniforms and express their style through their school stuff, like their stationary and school bag (28%).

UK girls have the biggest sweet tooth, with a huge 57% looking forward to biscuits in their lunchbox, compared to 32% in France. The French are more health-conscious, with 18% preferring milk as their beverage of choice when at school.

All the girls like art the best, but the second-favourite subjects vary by location. UK girls prefer English, French girls physical education, and US girls have a passion for maths. It’s great to see this generation of girls moving past the old stereotypes that have hampered girls in the past.

As any parent of a tween girl knows, friends are really important to these kids! French and US girls are more outgoing than their UK counterparts—they’re looking forward to making new friends, while the UK girls are more excited about sharing stories of their holiday adventures with their old friends.

We have a great Back to School Competition you can enter now.
